Youth suicide is a preventable public health problem, yet it occurs at high levels in California and across the nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is now the second leading cause of death among youth between 10 and 24 years of age.

Education and Prevention Measures at LVJUSD

• Since January 2019 over 700 staff, parents, and community members have been trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA). YMHFA teaches adults to recognize and respond to a mental health challenge in youth. Understanding suicide warning signs and suicide prevention are part of this training. YMHFA is offered in both English and Spanish.
  
  
• Each year, 澳门最快开奖直播 High School juniors are being trained in Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA), a course that teaches youth how to recognize and respond to a mental health challenge or crisis, such as thinking about suicide, in a peer. Similar to CPR, in tMHFA students learn a 5-step action plan to help their friends who may be facing a mental health challenge, substance use issues or a crisis, such as suicide. This year the program will be expanding to Granada High School.
  
  
• Mental Health Matters Information Centers are installed at all K-8, middle, and high schools in our district. The Mental Health Information Centers include hand-outs for students and parents on mental health protective factors, mental health challenges, and suicide prevention.
  
  
• Modeled after the state-of-the-art Wellness Center at LHS, middle and high schools across our district are establishing Wellness Centers, a place where students go to regulate their emotions and return to class ready to learn. Wellness Centers promote mental health throughout the school campus and also offer information on mental health resources at school and in the community. 
  
  
• In accordance with Ed Code Section 215, all middle and high school student ID's have the National Suicide Hotline and text line printed on the back so that every student has immediate access to help if needed. 
  
  
• In accordance with Assembly Bill 748, mental health information has been posted at all TK-8, middle, and high schools in our district. These posters include information on common behaviors of those struggling with their mental health, positive coping (protective) strategies to support mental health, and national hotlines and local community resources. 
• Our Freshman in Transition (FIT) classes at Granada and 澳门最快开奖直播 high schools include suicide prevention information and discussion as part of the curriculum.
  
  
• Teens for Life Suicide Prevention trainings will be offered at our middle and high schools this year.
